Power BI: 6 steps to create better solutions

If you want to build better solutions with Power BI, follow the Development cycle of Business Intelligence solutions (Business Intelligence). You can apply it to Power BI and many other tools that let you create reports and perform data analysis.

It is essential to follow these 6 steps to create quality analytics solutions:

Table of Contents
  1. Step 1: Ask yourself the right business questions
  2. Step 2: The Analytical Data Model (Star Model)
  3. Step 3: Get, transform, and load data into Power BI using Power Query
  4. Step 4: Optimize the data model and create the necessary calculations and KPIs using the DAX language
  5. Step 5: Create reports quickly and easily. Get the best solutions with Power BI
  6. Step 6: Share and make decisions as a team

Step 1: Ask yourself the right business questions

The development cycle that I use and that I propose to you begins by defining which Business Questions your data model should answer. If we want to get a good answer in terms of data analysis, the first thing we need those are good questions.

Step 2: The Analytical Data Model (Star Model)

From these questions we will do it create our analytical model, our set of tables and relations and for this we will start by designing it. But by designing it on paper or in some visual tool so that it is clear that said data structure (tables and relationships) is ideal to achieve the result we want to achieve, based on our business questions.

We will never open Power BI and load the data as it is in the source. First we will design a good data model, preferably a star model (In the following articles we will delve into what these star models are and how to create them).

Step 3: Get, transform, and load data into Power BI using Power Query

Because the data at the source is not what we need. Power BI has a component called Power Query, which allows us to perform all the data transformations we need.

Power demand It is the tool for obtaining, transforming and loading data. It allows us to visually carry out a large number of transformations, which we can automatically re-execute every time we need to update the data (In the following articles in this series we will go deeper and explain in detail what Power Query is and how it works).

Step 4: Optimize the data model and create the necessary calculations and KPIs using the DAX language

Once we load our data into the model, the next step is to optimize it so that it takes up as little memory as possible and returns results as quickly as possible.

The next step is to take advantage of the tool's great computing power to carry out all the calculations we need. We will do it all the way DAX language. Which gives us all the computing power we need to create all our indicators and KPIs.

Step 5: Create reports quickly and easily. Get the best solutions with Power BI

We're finally getting to the point where we're going to have the most fun. Have a model built and ready to make all the reports we need. We obtain the desired results, we navigate between the different reports applying the filters and conditions we need at any time, all thanks to the component Power BI reports (inform).

If the model is correct we can create dozens or hundreds of reports in a very short time, to quickly resolve all those business questions we ask ourselves.

Step 6: Share and make decisions as a team

Finally, since we are in a company and we will not only use all this for ourselves, but we will share it with our team, our boss and the rest of the company so that they can also analyze this data and make their own decisions.

Let's see what the Power BI service is, a cloud service where we will publish what we have developed on our desktop. Where we share with colleagues, we will collaborate based on the analysis and decisions we make.

Power BI goes far beyond what the desktop tool that we install on our computer offers us. It's an entire platform that has a number of cloud services. There you can upload your solutions created with Power BI Desktop and all your reports. You can connect anywhere you have an Internet connection, simply by using your Power BI account.

And from there you can get the most out of your data and make better decisions as a team.
