An essential book in the library of anyone who uses Power BI, you can find it HERE.

Start with this book, it is your starting point and then delve deeper into different aspects with other books on specific topics.

And also my collection of books on BI and analytics with Excel 2013 and Power BI titled "Analyze your business with Excel and Power BI. Learn from your data«. It currently consists of five free books, although they have been around for a while and the tools are evolving. You decide, if you still work with Excel 2013 I recommend it, if you have made the leap to Power BI I recommend my new Power BI book above.

The first two do not focus on any specific tool, what is explained in them can be applied to practically any manufacturer's tools. Naturally, there is no shortage of examples and images that refer to Excel and the BI tools of the Microsoft platform, which are the tools I usually work with.

I think reading it is very important, because without the basic knowledge explained there, you will hardly be able to get the most out of these tools. Can you imagine running an accounting application without a solid foundation of accounting knowledge? Yes, you could, if you have help, define templates with the most common accounting entries and so on. But, of course, the way to get the most out of any accounting application is to know the subject, know how to define a good structure of accounts and sub-accounts in your chart of accounts, etc.

Well, the same thing happens with the analytical tools that we have at our disposal today, they are very powerful and very easy to use. Another thing is to use them well based on solid knowledge.

I leave here the filling that I wrote at the time.

On the series «ANALYZE YOUR BUSINESS WITH EXCEL AND POWER BI. LEARN FROM YOUR DATA»

If you are a business user, accustomed to using Excel. If you're doing tedious, repetitive tasks to build reports and dashboards, analysis and visualization capabilities, it's time to take a big leap in knowledge generation and decision making. I help you do it with this series of books based on very simple ideas:

  • To know the fundamental principles on which BI & Analytics solutions are based and which are applicable to the different tools on the market, regardless of their manufacturer
  • Avoid starting to use the tools and studying the menus and the functions that compose them without having a good conceptual basis that allows you to get the most out of them.
  • Help you master the tools Microsoft offers users for integrating, analyzing, visualizing, and discovering knowledge from data. Excel, Power Pivot, Power View, Power Map, Power BI
  • If you later use tools from another manufacturer, you have the basis to adapt quickly and the change will not be traumatic for you.

In this post I will introduce you to the first two books of this collection:

BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE (BI) AND ANALYSIS. The art of converting data into knowledge. Volume I

When we talk about "BI & Analytics" we include concepts, methodologies and technologies. A cocktail that is not easy to digest. With this book we want you to understand them and be able to transmit them to other people in a very simple way, through similarities and practical examples.

Indispensable for all those who want:

  • Understand what BI and Analytics is
  • Know its main components
  • Find out what steps to follow for its creation
  • Become familiar with the Microsoft BI platform

DATA WAREHOUSE, DATA MART AND DIMENSIONAL MODELS. A fundamental pillar for the decision-making process. Volume II

We hear these terms quite frequently, but their meaning and the differences between them are not always clear to us. With this book we intend to expose all these concepts, integrate them with practical examples and different points of view and, finally, transfer our knowledge and experience to you so that you can design your own dimensional models, Data Marts and Data Warehouses.

If you wish:

  • Master the concepts of Data Warehouse and Data Mart and identify their differences
  • See the opinions of the two great gurus on the subject, Ralph Kimball and Bill Inmon
  • Be able to follow the appropriate process for creating dimensional models
  • Know and be able to apply the concepts: Table of Dimensions, Table of Facts, Star and Snowflake
  • Don't let the concept of Slowly Changing Dimensions (SCD) seem Chinese to you, as necessary as it is unknown
  • Be able to design dimensional models for various business processes
