5 essential books on Power BI

I present to you the Books about Power BI which I think is more interesting. In fact, they are part of my personal library and I recommend you include them in yours too.

They are books that you should read and put into practice everything they indicate. Furthermore, it is advisable to always have them on hand so you can consult them.

If you're working with Power BI or thinking about doing so, you won't just need to learn about the tool occasionally. But, just as you have with Excel over the years, you will enter into continuous learning.

We are dealing with tools so powerful and flexible that there is no limit to their knowledge and mastery. In my case, I've been working on it since Power Pivot for Excel 2010 appeared and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't learn about it. I hope to continue like this for a long time????

The first of the essential Power BI books: Impact with Power BI

Bring value and control to your business by applying the fundamentals of BI. Transform your data into valuable insights and impactful presentations.

This Power BI book includes a COMPLETE CASE STUDY in which he guides you step by step so that you can create a solution from scratch. In addition to learning, you will apply everything you learn.

Power BI book

It is a book, both for those starting from scratch and for those who have already used Power BI and want to go beyond the tool and learn the technical foundations and methods to apply. Even just for the good practices he explains and uses in the complete case study, it is already worth reading.

An essential book in the library of anyone who uses Power BI, you can find it HERE.

Start with this book, it is your starting point and then delve deeper into different aspects with other books on specific topics.

Fundamentals of stellar modeling

Practical approach with Power BI.

After reading the previous book, Impact with Power BI, if you want to delve deeper into some of the aspects covered there, such as star modeling, this is your book.

Power BI isn't just a tool for making pretty charts, "it's not a faster, prettier Excel." But the most important thing it has (as you have already seen in the book Impact with Power BI), is its excellent analytical database engine and its calculation capacity and speed. But for all this to work optimally, we must first master the fundamentals of stellar data modeling, the pillars on which it is based, and apply them in a practical and adapted way to Power BI.

If you want to delve deeper into the fundamentals of stellar modeling, I recommend this book that you can find HERE.

While it may seem like it is not a Power BI book, it focuses on some fundamentals, Star Modeling, which are essential. And even the practical cases are all with Power BI. Therefore for me it is an Essential Book, once you have a complete vision of the instrument. That's why I put it in second place among the Power BI books (following the order in which I recommend reading them).

The 3 most harmful mistakes made with Power BI and how to avoid them

More than a book on Power BI, it is an essential and free guide that will help you use the tool optimally.

In my professional career I have met and continue to meet numerous clients and students, the main one being:

  • Making those 3 mistakes
  • Don't be aware of it
  • No one told them or explained how to avoid them.

And I don't want it to happen to you too, which is why I created this free guide that you can download by clicking HERE.

I also keep these books here, which are the ones I started with and which initially appeared in this post. Although the images refer to the version of Power BI that existed years ago and has evolved a lot, its essence and content are still mostly valid.

Presentation of Microsoft Power BI: a book that is a few years old but which maintains its essence

Free book, published by Microsoft. It is an introductory book, which gives a clear and concise vision of the product. Furthermore, written by excellent authors, Marco Russo Yes Alberto Ferrariof which you will find other books in this same report.

It provides an overview of all the elements that are part of the set of tools that make up Microsoft Power BI, these are the main points it covers:

  • introduction
  • Introducing Power BI
  • Dashboard sharing
  • Understand data refresh
  • Using Power BI Desktop
  • Obtain data from services and content packages
  • Build a data model
  • Improved Power BI reports
  • Using Microsoft Power BI in your business

You can find it on both the Microsoft and Amazon websites, in both cases the download is free from these links:

Microsoft Power BI Applied: Bring your data to life!

Second of the Power BI books

This is a really useful and practical book, you can already tell from the title that it is a fairly practical book. Although it also has the necessary theoretical basis to apply them. In fact, if you decide to buy just one of the books mentioned here, this is the one I recommend. Written by Theo Lachevone of my favorite authors, from whom I also purchased his books on Analysis Services and Reporting Services.

Featured Content:

  • Part I: Power BI for business users
  • Part II: Power BI for data analysts
  • Part III: Power BI for professionals
  • Part IV: Power BI for developers

Even if you are a user and not a developer, do not hesitate to purchase this excellent book. In reality, the part aimed at developers will also be very interesting, and does not exceed 15% of the book.

You can find it HERE (the cover has changed in the new edition, the link is correct).

Power Pivot and Power BI: The Excel User's Guide to Dax, Power Query, Power BI, and Power Pivot in Excel 2010-2016

The third of the Power BI books

It is a book that has a different approach, its authors (Rob Collie Yes Avichal Singh) are Excel experts who have moved their knowledge to Power BI. Don't think that these are inexperienced people, on the contrary, today they are two of the greatest Excel and Power BI experts in the world. I mention the above, because they make many references and comparisons with Excel, since they master both subjects. They also have a good foundation in DAX, the expression language you should know to get the most out of Power BI. In fact, about 80% of the book is about DAX.

There is another more advanced and specific DAX book, which I personally like even more, "The Definitive Guide to DAX". Written by Marco Russo and Alberto Ferrari. It's a book that, despite having known about it since it came out on the market, I purchased a few days ago. This, combined with the depth with which it covers the DAX expression language, means that I won't comment on it in more detail now. I will dedicate a complete article to it later.

You can find it HERE.

Power BI books in Spanish

Since some of you will have difficulty reading material in English, I inform you that I do not currently know of any books on Power BI in Spanish. But there are a number of books whose content is based on Power BI add-ins for Excel:

  • Power demand
  • Power pin
  • Power display
  • Map of power

What you've learned is fully applicable to new versions of Power BI.

It is the collection of 5 books that I wrote and that I have already talked about previously.

I leave you the links:

Remember that they are free.

Conclusions

Keep in mind something very important. Power BI is a constantly evolving solution, at the Power BI service level the updates are weekly and at the Power BI Desktop level the updates are monthly.

This makes none of the Books about Power BI that you purchase is never fully updated, you will find menu options and features in the product that are not reflected in the books. Due to the writing process, publishing and the appearance of new editions, it is impossible to update them monthly.

Despite this, I have the above mentioned books in my personal library, reading them was very useful to me and still feel very useful, once read, as reference material. You just have to keep in mind that there will be little details that are out of date, but the whole basis of what they explain in detail is totally valid.

I hope you enjoy this material and will share it with all your colleagues interested in the topic.
